Research Overview
This is a companion website for the article "K-Drama as Ecocinema? A Multimodal Analysis of Climate Change Representation in 60 Globally Popular Korean TV Dramas", by the authors Cristiane Melchior, Hannele Seeck, and Ratna Aini Hadi, published in the International Journal of Communication (Forthcoming).
This study explores climate change themes in 60 globally popular K-dramas from 2019 to 2024 by applying sentiment, network and framing analysis. Our research examines how climate change is portrayed as an underrepresented but critical global issue in popular entertainment, analyzing the invisibility of environmental narratives in Korean television dramas.
Key Research Components
- Dataset: 158 scenes from 1,135 hours of Korean TV dramas watched in full
- Sources: IMDb, MyDramaList, Netflix, Rakuten Viki, Ranker, and Amazon Prime
- Method: Mixed-method approach using computational methods
- Focus: Climate change representation and framing in popular media
Framing Analysis: Entman's Four Functions
Table 2 - Empirical Results Organized by Entman's Four Core Framing Functions
Table 2 presents the core empirical insights from the reviewed studies, organized through the lens of Entman's four framing functions: (1) problem definition, how climate change is portrayed; (2) causal interpretation, who or what is held responsible; (3) moral evaluation, the ethical judgments expressed; and (4) treatment recommendation, the solutions or actions proposed.
Entman's Four Core Framing Functions
Problem Definition
How issues are portrayed and characterized
Causal Interpretation
Who or what is held responsible for the issue
Moral Evaluation
The ethical judgments and values expressed
Treatment Recommendation
The solutions or actions proposed
| Study | Problem Definition | Causal Interpretation | Moral Evaluation | Treatment Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entman and Rojecki (1993) | Nuclear arms as a geopolitical or activist issue | Omitted government policy as cause; disarmament activists framed as fringe | Rare; implied irresponsibility of activists | Implicitly discouraged disarmament; reinforced status quo |
| Akhavan-Majid, and Ramaprasad (2000) | Gender equality (US); foreign interference (China) | US: Blame on Chinese policy; China: Blame on Western bias | US: Universal rights; China: Cultural relativism | US: Call for reform; China: Sovereignty defense |
| Entman (2003) | Terrorism linked to Iraq | Iraq framed as central cause; omission of Saudi role | War framed as moral duty; good vs. evil dichotomy | Military intervention, invasion of Iraq |
| Beaudoin (2007) | SARS as public health problem | U.S.: governance failings; China: no attribution to officials | U.S.: critiques of transparency; China: patriotic unity | U.S.: accountability; China: state-led heroism |
| Matthes, and Kohring (2008) | Biotech as economic opportunity vs. ethical challenge | Causes vary: innovation lag, unregulated science | Hope (economic gain) vs. caution (identity, ethics) | Fund R&D vs. impose regulation |
| Bell and Entman (2011) | Economic stagnation solved by tax cuts | Economic recovery framed as requiring tax relief | Tax cuts portrayed as inherently good, little fairness discourse | Promote tax cuts as shared national good |
| Xie (2015) | Climate as political (US) vs. global (China) issue | US: Partisan divide; China: shared global blame | US: ethical debates, skepticism; China: fairness for developing world | US: regulatory conflict; China: innovation and diplomacy |
| Han et al. (2017) | Climate as urgent human/environmental risk | Global emissions; collective responsibility | Implicit justice frame; limited explicit moral claims | Global cooperation, sustainable leadership |
| Coleman and Chen (2020) | Left-behind children as emotional/episodic issue | Systemic causes (poverty, policy) omitted | Framed as unfortunate tragedy; sympathy for individuals | Personal/charity actions rather than policy reform |
| This Study | Climate change as an underrepresented but critical global issue in popular entertainment; invisibility of environmental narratives in K-dramas | Industrialization and socio-political disinterest in climate storytelling; commercial pressures within media production | Environmental neglect as a cultural and ethical shortcoming; systemic marginalization of climate narratives in popular media | Leverage popular culture, especially globalized formats like K-dramas, to normalize ecological themes and foster climate awareness through narrative |

| Character | Dialogue |
|---|---|
| Team Leader, Munmin Daily | So it means that this summer will be hot as usual. Then it's easy. "The worst summer ever.", "Record-breaking heatwaves.", "Sauna-like heat." That's less than five words. Why make such a long title? |
| Chae Yoo Jin | I'm not saying it's especially hot this summer. The average temperature will rise by one to two degrees due to global warming. |
| Team Leader, Munmin Daily | Do you think people are interested in global warming? It can be provocative. So write something that makes people want to read. How many times do I have to tell you? That's how you sell air conditioners. Don't you know who our biggest sponsor is? |
| Chae Yoo Jin | This isn't an ad agency. Why are we advertising air conditioners? |
| Team Leader, Munmin Daily | Because it's good for you, for me, and for everyone else here. So please do as you're told. Let's take home some bonuses. Please? |

| Yoon Sae Bom | Okay... |
| Kim Se Hun | So I'm collecting all kinds of survival gear. I'm also collecting combat rations from other countries. |
